Welsh in Education – The Workforce’s Welsh Language Skills
Please see below a letter from your Head of Education regarding ‘Welsh in Education – The Workforce’s Welsh Language Skills’:
Dear Head teacher,
Welsh in Education – The workforce’s Welsh language skills
The Welsh Government have set a clear vision and challenge to increase the number of Welsh speakers. The education sector is expected to play a prominent role in developing the Welsh skills of all learners at all of our schools, and subsequently, develop the workforce’s Welsh skills.
In order to commence planning for this, each consortium was asked to organize an audit of the workforce Welsh skills at every school.
So as to raise awareness of the importance of this work, presentations are given for head teacher groups in all of the North Wales counties, as well as for the regional unions forum, human resources county officers, and county officers who support governing bodies.
Below are two video clips – one in Welsh and the other in English – that provides the background for this work and requesting every head teacher’s collaboration to conduct the audit with all staff members – teachers, assistants and other support staff, including, where possible, cleaning staff and kitchen staff. This audit will enable the area to plan appropriate training to support the workforce.
May I kindly request that you take a few minutes to listen to the content of the videos and messages contained. (A summary version of the video clips are also included – you could share these with the school staff)

Welsh Language Skills Survey – A Summary:
In compliance with Welsh Government requirements, it is intended to commence the audit at the end of March this year and you will soon receive further details explaining the exact steps and the process involved to enable your staff to complete the questionnaire. The questionnaire will be in electronic form and should not take much time to complete. We urge you to allocate time for staff to complete the questionnaire during school hours or during directed time. A small financial contribution will be given to your school after completing the questionnaire as an appreciation of your cooperation.
(For your information –we will trial the questionnaire in a specific percentage of the schools across the region beforehand to identify any obstacles and obtain feedback on the questionnaire completion process – before we cascade it to everybody).
The questionnaire will be sent to you directly via e-mail. In the meantime, I urge you to share the information with your entire school staff and kindly request your collaboration to encourage and support all staff members to complete the audit.
Yours sincerely,
