Teaching Assistants Learning Pathway

Two programmes are delivered across Wales for teaching assistants:

  • Induction programme for newly-appointed teaching assistants
  • Programme for practising teaching assistants

 

INDUCTION PROGRAMME FOR NEW TEACHING ASSISTANTS

The Induction Programme for New Teaching Assistants is for individuals newly appointed to their role. This national programme will be delivered on a digital platform. Training can be completed at a time convenient to the teaching assistants and their setting. Individuals will develop the knowledge and skills needed to become a successful teaching assistant in their setting.

 The 2 modules will explore:

  • The Welsh Education Context – my responsibilities as a professional in Welsh education
  • Professional Standards for Assisting Teaching
  • The Curriculum for Wales and supporting frameworks
  • Pedagogy, developing my craft to support learners

PROGRAMME FOR PRACTISING TEACHING ASSISTANTS

Regional consortia are offering training for teaching assistants who have been in post for two years or more and who would welcome an update on the changing context of the profession.

This national programme will be delivered regionally by GwE.

The programme will provide information on the professional standards, current relevant strategies to support their practices and a range of ideas and strategies to inspire professionalism back in school.

The programme will cover:

  • Professional Standards for Assisting Teaching
  • the role of a teaching assistant and how to develop professionally
  • how policies and frameworks impact the teaching assistant’s role
  • changes in Education and how they are relevant in TAs’ own settings
  • establishing and improving professional Networks and collaboration among teaching assistants within and between schools

The training is offered to school clusters, and can be delivered over 2 full days, 4 half days or a combination of both.

The programme will be held on TEAMS over 4 (2-hour) sessions, starting on 23/11/2021 (English-medium) or 24/11/2021 (Welsh-medium) between 13:15 and 15:15. Supply costs are available

Teaching Assistants’ Learning Pathway

2019-2020

Two programmes will be delivered across Wales for teaching assistants:

  • Induction programme for newly-appointed teaching assistants
  • Programme for practising teaching assistants

The two programmes will provide invaluable opportunities to network and collaborate with professionals from across the region.

In addition, a National HLTA Development Day will be held in February 2020.

Supply costs will be reimbursed to schools at a nationally agreed rate.  Registration is via G6.

This national programme will be delivered regionally by GwE.  It will be tailored to new TAs and will help them to understand their role and responsibilities and to embrace the core values and dispositions of the professional standards.

The programme will cover:

  • the role of a teaching assistant and how to maximise professional impact
  • how policies and frameworks impact the role of the teaching assistant
  • to embrace the changes in Education and how they are relevant in TAs’ own settings

NATIONAL HLTA DEVELOPMENT DAY

The national HLTA Development Day will be held at Venue Cymru, Llandudno, on 6 March.  The Day is aimed at teaching assistants who have HLTA status.  It will provide an opportunity to see examples of good practice in schools across the GwE region.

There will be two guest speakers: Mike Gershon, expert educationalist, and Professor Neil Frude from The Happiness Consultancy.

There is no fee for attending the Development Day and HLTAs’ supply costs will be reimbursed.

Induction for new teaching assistants

Regional consortia are offering an induction programme for new teaching assistants (appointed in the last two years).

This national programme will be delivered regionally by GwE. It will be tailored to new TAs and will help them to understand their role & responsibilities and to embrace the core values & dispositions of the professional standards. There will be two full days and supply costs will be paid to schools.

The programme will cover:

  • The role of a teaching assistant and how to maximise professional impact
  • To understand how policies and frameworks impact my role
  • To implement skills and knowledge gained to enhance my daily practice
  • The Professional learning Passport (PLP)
  • Changing contexts: Draft Professional Standards for Supporting Teaching, National Training Pathway, New Curriculum for Wales

  • Policies and frameworks supporting practice
  • The Professional Learning Passport (PLP)
  • Changing contexts
  • Developing good listening, questioning and feedback for learners
  • Supporting and challenging every learner appropriately and adapting to all needs
