Did you know that NQT Induction in Wales is changing from September 2024?
Headteacher
- The headteacher is responsible for appointing a trained induction mentor (IM), regardless of whether they intend to employ a newly qualified teacher (NQT) in this academic year.
- The headteacher is responsible for ensuring that all NQTs working in the school receive regular mentoring support from a trained induction mentor.
The headteacher must ensure the NQTs receive additional 10% non-contact time to engage with national and regional NQT induction professional learning. Funding to support this is provided by Welsh Government through the EWC.
Induction Mentor
- The trained induction mentor will be responsible for supporting the NQT with learning and teaching, for jointly identifying and supporting development priorities and professional enquiry projects with the NQT as well as providing mentoring support.
- The induction mentor will make recommendations to the appropriate body for induction on whether the NQT should pass, fail or be given an extension at the end of the induction period.
- The induction mentor will participate in moderation of induction profiles.
Validators
- Validators will work with a sample of mentors to quality assure the induction process.
- The deployment of validators is at the discretion of the appropriate body (AB)and the regional induction lead officer.
NQTs
- NQTs who commence induction in September 2024 will no longer be expected to write 10-20 PLEs to show progress against 32 standards descriptors.
- From September 2024, NQTs will complete 2 professional enquiry projects that demonstrate progress across the 5 professional standards for teaching and leadership holistically. In addition to this, NQTs and mentors will undertake 3 reviews and provide at least 3 lesson observations.
